50 West 13th Street was home to Jacob Day, a wealthy Black caterer and abolitionist worth the equivalent of millions today, and later the 13th Street Repertory Theater where Bette Midler honed her craft. Advocates begged the Landmarks Preservation Commission to protect it in 2020 after the longtime theater owner died; the agency refused, and distinctive ironwork was lost. Only in June 2024 did the LPC relent and calendar it. At this hearing the designation drew unanimous support, Council Members Rivera and Salaam, a former resident, and Village Preservation's Andrew Berman, who used the moment
