A routine stated meeting turned into one of the most personal sessions in recent Council memory. After Reverend Diaz's homophobic remarks, Speaker Corey Johnson demanded a separate roll-call on a resolution stripping him of his committee. One by one members explained their votes: Daniel Dromm noted Diaz 'compared LGBT people to thieves,' Ritchie Torres called him 'a symbol of irredeemable' homophobia, Vanessa Gibson apologized 'on behalf of The Bronx,' and Brad Lander added 'a Jewish voice strongly in favor.' Johnson recounted being suicidal when he came out at 17. Only Chaim Deutsch voted no.
